One of the main chapel doors has been unable to self close for quite a while now but recently had been more of an issue as the double action hinge was starting to sag and not allow the door to even close properly. Bearing in mind that these hinges are almost certainly original to the church and are now 105 years old they have given very good service. So the offending hinge was removed and taken to bits to investigate. A broken spring was quickly diagnosed once the components had been stripped. Not something I can just go and get a spare part from so carefully the broken end was welded back on and heat treated again. Reassembly followed and the hinge now has its spring back. To further increase its life the hinge has now been reversed so that the other side is now taking the main strain and the repaired one is on the operation direction which is less well used. The door now has its self closing facility back.
